Devon Air Ambulance Trust - http://www.daat.org/
We would like to thank the organisers of the Powderham Castle Horse Trials for once again supporting the Devon Air
Ambulance Trust. It is only through the continued support of community events such as this that we are able to continue
to develop and expand this essential emergency service. Thank you also for coming along to pledge your support.
We hope you have a very enjoyable time.
The Devon Air Ambulance Trust:
The Devon Air Ambulance Trust is the charity which raises the funds to keep both Air Ambulances in Devon flying
·
The first Devon Air Ambulance mission was flown on 27 August 1992
·
The charity was started by Ann Thomas whose son died in 1986 after being knocked from his bicycle. The consultant at hospital told her the quicker a patient gets to hospital/receives medical treatment, the more likely they are to survive
·
It costs £2.2 million each year to keep both helicopters flying
·
With 2 Air Ambulances 50% of Devon can be reached by Air Ambulance within 5 minutes, with the remainder within
15 minutes
·
The charity is completely independent of central and local Government and is funded solely by voluntary donations from and fundraising by local people and businesses
·
Devon has 2 Air Ambulances – one based in Exeter, the other in North Devon
·
The North Devon Air Ambulance went into service on 28 April 2005
·
Between them, they have flown in excess of 12,000 missions to date
What do the helicopters do?
Undertake life-saving missions – accidents such as road traffic and equestrian accidents as well as medical emergencies such as cardiac arrests
Reduce
patient deterioration ie spinal injuries, head injuries and burns
Take
the patient to a specialist hospital which may not be the closest to the incident
.

20 YEARS OF ELF
ELF is delighted to continue to be associated with the Bicton Horse Trials in its’ new guise as the Powderham Castle Horse Trials and welcome all supporters old and new to our site on the web in this very special year for ELF. You can use the link above to view the ELF Web site.
Guess the number of coloured balls in the car and win it. Just one of the many ways in which ELF is celebrating 20 Years.
On 22 October 1987 six people impacted in different ways (sufferers, relatives, doctors) by leukaemia signed a legal document (Trust Deed) creating Exeter Leukaemia Fund with the objective to relieve sickness amongst persons suffering from leukaemia and related diseases in Devon and particularly those persons suffering from leukaemia and related diseases at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital Trust.
Since that day more than £4 million has been contributed to provide equipment; deliver patient care and fund research into the managing and monitoring of leukaemia. Providing two thirds of the cost (£1.5 million) of the Haematology Centre at the Royal Devon and ExeterHospital, which opened in April 2002 and was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal on Tuesday 9 September 2003 has been the most significant milestone on the journey.
The Haematology Centre is recognized as one of the best in Europe and accolades such as “the facility was without doubt the best in Europe”(Professor John Lilleyman, President of the Royal College of Pathology); “this cutting-edge facility” (Professor Ray Powles, recently retired Head of Leukaemia at the Royal Marsden Hospital); “an extremely good facility, state of the art” (Dr Mike Potter, Director of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Consultant Haematologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust are continually being paid to it.
Amazingly, two of those first Trustees still remain as Trustees and one is a patient, clearly demonstrating that leukaemia is not always a killer disease. To think that the first few years saw the charity income below £10,000 but by the late 90s it had risen to just below £200,000. Now it is more than half a million pounds.
Unfortunately the number of cases reported with leukaemia and related blood disorders continues to rise at a dramatic rate and for some unknown reason the South West is the worst affected area in the country. Around 12,000 patients are currently being treated, or having their condition monitored, by staff at the Haematology Centre at the RD&E. So the next twenty years look to be as eventful and challenging as the previous two decades. ELF will need to continue to raise even more money.
Celebrations of twenty years of ELF began with a Service of Thanksgiving in Exeter Cathedral, which launched ELF week and a year of 20 Years of ELF events culminating with the Celebration Ball at Sandy Park on Saturday 18 October 2008. So far a Film Premiere; Masquerade Ball hosted by Patron, Noel Edmonds; a limited edition painting; unique Bethlehem franking for Christmas Cards have all taken place. Coming up are the Arctic Challenge, Walk around the Boundaries, Tea with ELF, a Patient Conference, Canoe Challenge, Jazz at Escott and much more. Running throughout the year is the competition to ‘Guess the number of balls’ in the Renault Campus.
